Orphan Rhino Sanctuary Rescues an Abandoned Zebra and Adopts It, Giving One Of The Rhinos A Best Friend

Must Read

At the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in South Africa, an endearing odd couple is assisting each other in their recovery.

Although the cause for their connection and the circumstances surrounding it are heartbreaking, it’s good to see a silver lining shine as brilliantly as this.

We’ll go into some of the horrible realities that these animals had to face, as it’s vital context; nevertheless, I regret if this is too much.

A baby rhino and a baby zebra were both found orphaned in the wild and became fast friends at the sanctuary where they were taken in.

Care for Wild is the world’s largest orphan rhino sanctuary, with the mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, releasing, and protecting the animals in their care.

After storms and heavy rain, the zebra, named Modjadji, was discovered abandoned. Despite specializing in rhino care, the personnel couldn’t leave it behind.

They first discovered the zebra in November 2021 in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest reserves.

The shelter said they’d “received a new baby but a little smaller and stripier than our normal patients.” in an Instagram post.

Rangers on patrol in the reserve stumbled upon a very young zebra foal laying abandoned and unmoving in the wet grass after the storms and heavy rains.

She was only a few days old and was extremely weak, making it difficult for her to stand, so she was admitted to the sanctuary’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

She met a rhino named Aquazi in the sanctuary’s ICU, and their wet past brought them together to create a relationship.

Modjadji, which means ‘rain queen,’ was given to the baby zebra as a lovely tribute to her past.

The unfortunate animal was suffering from a variety of diseases, but the employees kept a careful check on her and did everything they could to help her.

Day by day, she regained her strength, and along the way, she developed a rhino friend named Aquazi, who was also in the ICU.

Their curiosity got the best of them, despite how implausible their bond seemed.

Shortly after Modjadji was discovered, workers unexpectedly upon a baby rhino with the umbilical chord still connected.

A baby rhino was discovered less than a month later. It must have been less than a day old because its still-attached umbilical chord indicated that it was alone and fighting for its life.

Workers at the sanctuary lost little time in saving the rhino, sending it to the intensive care unit.

The calf was really weak, and she was always accompanied by a caregiver who kept an eye on her health, helped her maintain her temperature, and fed her.

While the reason for the baby’s abandonment is unknown, the rangers chose to transport her to Care for Wild so the hyenas wouldn’t eat her.

It’s possible that her discovery came during a dreadful week in which poachers killed scores of rhinos in a matter of days.

It’s a known fact that infants are abandoned once their moms’ horns are plucked. But, later in the post, we’ll go over the reasons for poaching, their effects, and how to avoid it.

Daisy was her name, and she was in horrible shape, requiring continuous monitoring and care. She wasn’t sure if she’d make it.

Daisy’s continued breathing and fight for life appeared like a miracle with each passing day. She gradually gained strength and was able to pull through.

The first rhino, Aquazi, recovered and was released from the ICU, with Daisy taking his place, and Modjadji wasted no time in meeting a new friend.

Modjadji began befriending Daisy after Aquazi left the ICU, and the two rapidly became inseparable.

The zebra provided a lot of comfort to the rhino, according to the sanctuary, which praised Modjadji’s kindness and care.

The workers explained Newsweek that “Modjadji is amazing company for Daisy and very affectionate towards her.”

“She is a friend that can be with her 24/7 and this in turn helps to prevent too much human contact with Daisy.”

Despite several setbacks in Daisy’s health, she persevered, defying all chances and recently celebrating her fourth month.

She couldn’t have done it without the help of all of her carers, as well as her best buddy.

Daisy found solace and companionship in the zebra, and she soon began to defy all obstacles.

She marked her first month and, more recently, her fourth month, rapidly maturing into a lovely rhino.

Their bond is undeniable, with each baby providing a much-needed friend after what they’d been through.

The two had gotten extremely mischievous and playful, locating the milk processing station and causing some trouble for a worker.

Daisy still has a long way to go in mastering the art of grazing the lush, sweet grass, which Modjadji tried to teach her.

When the zebra and rhino are mature enough, they will be released into the wild, but that day is still a long way off.

We continue to wish for the best and keep track of Modjadji, Daisy, and all of the other animals who come to the Care for Wild sanctuary.

We can only be grateful for the sanctuaries that safeguard innocent animals from an untimely death, and we hope to see a day when all animals are no longer poached for outmoded or worthless causes.

For the time being, we’ll continue to follow Modjadji and Daisy’s adventures and the joy they offer to others around them.
